Villages on the River
Drawn in black sumi ink and completed in watercolors and Chinese white, this long and narrow depiction of several villages along a river is my composite of many traditional images depicted in the renowned Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting, a classic resource for Chinese brush painters ever since that book was first published in Nanjing by the artist Wang Gai (in 1679). I used the exercise to showcase the traditional ways of painting water, waves, mountains, various varieties of trees, bridges, travelers and, of course, the floating houses and boats.
