River Lee Scene, China
I sketched the Lee many times with pencil and watercolors while I was on a steamboat, cruising up the river. I was amazed by the look of the vertical mountains, so much in reality like the traditional brush paintings done over the ages by Chinese artists. Often they looked like playful fairy-tale forms. So I painted them here in the playful style of Raoul Dufy, the French artist and designer whose cheerful and colorful style is unmistakably all his own.
