Pine Tree with Great White Heron
My Chinese brush painting training came in handy here, especially for the pine needles, which are done in traditional strokes. Although I used a contemporary medium and ground, my treatment of the tree limbs and bark accords with the so-called “confident master style” rather than the tighter, more rigid “student style” of Chinese traditional painting. My friend Thorell Tsomondo possesses the sister painting in “student style,” which has more birds than this one and is even more striking, I think.
