Catfish Cove, C&O Canal
This spot can be seen from the famed Billy Goat Trail near the historic Chesapeake and Ohio Canal that runs parallel to the Potomac River on the Maryland side. I sketched this spot many times and did many en plein air studies in watercolors before creating this large version in my studio. Catfish Cove is a favorite destination of dog walkers and hikers. While I have never seen catfish there, wonderful pawpaw groves flourish in the surrounding woods. (Pawpaw fruits look nothing like the Peruvian chirimoyas they smell and taste like. Yum.)
