My Hostas and Their Friends
Painted at the same time as Columbine and Jack-in-the-Pulpit, this painting is also inspired by what native wildflowers were “up” that day in our Potomac back yard. These hostas were lucky- -so far. For the past two years, deer have munched on the flowers, then the leaves, and finally the stalks themselves, cutting the plants right down to the ground. Deer do much of the damage at night, which is why this painting has a dark ground.
