James Baldwin in Chartres Cathedral
This portrait of the writer James Baldwin (1924-1987), commissioned by the Howard University Department of English for presentation to the Baldwin family on the occasion of the Heart’s Day Gala Dinner held in his honor, is now in the Baldwin family collection. I chose the Chartres Cathedral setting for this portrait to commemorate Baldwin’s important essay titled “Stranger in the Village,” which relates his experience there.
