Brahmin Bull and Moon
The leaping bull in this painting may remind one of the cow that leapt over the moon, but it is not the same creature at all. In a pasture on the way to my place in Madison County, Virginia, a lone white brahmin bull grazed peacefully for several years. Then, one day, it was no longer there. I never learned its story, but I thought I might commemorate the joy it gave me to see it each time I passed that field. The fancifulness of this particular leaping bull was inspired, I must confess, by an Indian design that I found in a book of antique “clip-art” images.
