Big Blue Irises
My teacher, Helen Zse, loved to paint irises, and her love was contagious. Our lessons consisted of sitting at a big table around the master, who spoke instructively about what she was doing as she did it. Our sessions were all about direct observation of her method of painting and for taking notes about her color preparations and her recommended stroke types. We could try our own hands at imitating each lesson only once we were home. A part of every session with the master was devoted to her “correction” of our errors, right on our homework paintings. Such a different system of apprenticeship! But that’s the classic Chinese way.
