Andean Scene, Homage to El Greco
El Greco achieved a mystical quality in his paintings of religious themes by using cool colors and seeming to stretch the images skywards. I thought it would be appropriate to try his approach to convey the quite literally sublime (i.e., lofty) in a watercolor painting of the Andes mountains. By the way, and not unconnected to this stylistic choice, El Greco (1541-1614) was born in Greece but lived and worked in Toledo, Spain, during the exact time that the Spanish conquistadores would have been first encountering these challenging landforms.
